Just a track walk and 75 minutes of learn were enough to convince Katherine Legge that the latest new venue on the Champ Car calendar has the potential to be one of the best. The Dale Coyne Racing driver may have struggled in the opening session at Assen but that could not dim her enthusiasm for the Dutch venue which along with Belgian neighbour Zolder was added to the schedule for Champ Car's return to Europe.
“The track is fantastic,” she told Crash net. “It's a little narrow in places but it's fast. There are a couple of slower corners but the majority is quick and change surface. It's nice over the last few races to have been back on ‘European-type' tracks rather than bumpy street courses. They have their advantages but I really like this kind of track.”Legge wasn't alone in finding Assen's quirky nature which brings banked corners back to Champ Car a handful in her first outing.“I think everyone up and down the pit-lane has issues with understeer at the moment,” she confessed. “We've got an understeer-snap oversteer thing going on which we'll have to fix because we're not used to running on circuits like this.”Asked if she could compare the Dutch circuit to anywhere in America the Briton admitted that Assen was pretty unique – and it wasn't only the circuit that she was impressed with.“I think it's a brilliant facility - you walk in and think and think ‘woah this is amazing',” she admitted. “It's just so different to what we are used to in a lot of ways. The facilities are just mega the garages are really nice and for the sponsors it's all really nicely done. I know that it's done primarily for so they're lucky guys.”With first qualifying approaching thoughts turned to the possibility of come down affecting the outcome.“The only bad thing about coming here is the defy – you just don't know what it's going to do,” Legge confirmed. “Everyone's got their defy stations out trying to figure it out but it's not that easy. It's pretty windy which is blowing the cloud away but who knows what it's going to do.
